The New Orleans Police Department will soon partner with a public safety software company to help officers save time and equip them with valuable investigative tools, the agency said Thursday.
Mark43, the software company, is a records management system that will assist officers in drafting paperwork and conducting investigations, the department said.
“Public safety is our top priority, and this partnership with Mark43 represents a significant commitment to providing our officers with the best technology available,” said Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick.
The NOPD said benefits of the platform will be reduced paperwork, improved crime data collection, enhanced investigative capabilities and resilience and security for its officers.
This includes the department gaining access to information from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, which can help the NOPD identify any potential connections to gun crimes nationwide.
“Safety is a cornerstone of a thriving city,” said Mayor LaToya Cantrell. “This investment in cutting-edge technology demonstrates our unwavering commitment to equipping our brave officers with the tools they need to protect our community. This is a major step forward in our efforts to create a safer New Orleans for everyone.”
NEW ORLEANS — NOPD is implementing new technology they say could streamline operations. It’s called Mark43 and according to NOPD, it’ll keep all reports and records in one place now.
“The purpose of this technology is to replace some of our existing systems, then integrate some of our other third-party applications,” said NOPD Director of Analytics, Jessica Nezat.
“So all of our data can live in one place which makes operations much more streamlined and it makes operations much more efficient for officers and down the line,” she said.
“It also improves our data quality and our accuracy and at the end of the day what we’re going to be looking at is full compliance with federal and state regulatory guidelines,” Nezat added.
Right now, a police report can take anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes, according to NOPD. With Mark 43, writing those reports will be much quicker.
“Anything that requires a report will be written into this system and our digiticket, if you receive a ticket that’s a different system currently that data will now live in this system as well,” Nezat said.
Less time used on writing reports means more time for officers to be out patrolling the streets.
“Making that more efficient enables officers to be more available and more on the street that’s going to help with our response times with solving cases faster that information will be there now,” Nezat said.
NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – The New Orleans Police Department hopes an upgrade in technology will increase transparency and improve public safety.
NOPD is in the process of implementing Mark43, a new cloud-based records management system. According to NOPD, most reports currently take 15 to 45 minutes to complete. The department wants to cut that number down so officers can proactively police.
“Making that more efficient makes officers be more available and more on the street. That will obviously help with response times and solving cases faster. That information will be there now,” said Jessica Nezat, NOPD’s director of analytics.
NOPD says once Mark43 is fully running, the platform will reduce paperwork, improve crime data collection and enhance investigative capabilities.
“Having better quality data, having more accurate data, having that data in one environment increases our ability to be transparent with the public,” Nezat said. “In terms of whether it is an incident report request down to the dashboards we put out so the public can see the stats, can see the trends and can see those things at any time.”
The NOPD says the system pairs with data from the ATF to identify connections between gun crimes across the country. Nezat says other agencies, like Atlanta and Washington D.C.’s police departments, are using the technology, and locally, the Louisiana State Police. Also, the system will feed into the entire Orleans Parish criminal justice system.
“Our data being accurate and through the enterprise service bus that has effects downstream,” Nezat said. “The accuracy and operations are streamlined for other agencies like OPSO, the DA’s Office and even the court system.”,
According to the city, Mark43 will cost nearly $4.6 million over the next three years. NOPD vows the system will meet all federal and state regulatory guidelines.
“Thanks to the city, from the Mayor to the City Council, for approving the purchase of a new records management system,” said Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick.
NOPD says Mark43 will launch department wide in about a year.

In 2023, more than 353 million individuals in the U.S. were impacted by data compromises. Even if most people aren’t aware of the actual statistics, they have likely seen at least some of the regular (almost inescapable) headline stories about high-profile breaches. But even understanding the potential consequences of data breaches and the importance of robust security features, technology users are still apt to be annoyed by cumbersome sign-on systems or laggy tools.
When building and updating a technology platform, balancing strong security features with high performance standards and an optimal user experience is challenging, but doing so successfully can be a competitive differentiator for a tech services company—and can keep colleagues using the internal tools tech teams build happy and productive. Below, members of Forbes Technology Council discuss practical ways tech teams can improve their chances of achieving a tech platform trifecta: robust security, snappy performance and a positive UX.
1. Set Up Intuitive MFA
One tip is to implement an intuitive multifactor authentication system for secure access while ensuring it integrates seamlessly into the user experience. This strengthens security without compromising usability or performance, maintaining a balance between robust protection and user satisfaction. – Mohit Gupta, Damco Solutions
2. Implement Adaptive Security Measures
The key to balancing strong security and a smooth user experience is adaptive security measures. Think of it as having a security system that gets smarter and more flexible based on what’s happening. Instead of treating every user and action the same way, adaptive security adjusts the level of protection based on such things as user behavior, location and the sensitivity of the data being accessed. – Brad Smith, Paycom
3. Go Truly Passwordless
Eliminating passwords and moving to a truly passwordless world significantly enhances the security of any platform while delivering a differentiated UX. Leverage identity and access management platforms that enable your end users to use phishing-resistant MFA factors for seamless single sign-on into any corporate application. Secure access by analyzing contextual access and revoking access based on high risk. – Vijay Pitchumani, Okta
4. Prioritize Cloud-Native Infrastructure
Prioritize cloud-native infrastructure for robust security and efficiency. To do so, ensure your tech vendor shows SOC 2 compliance and that you evaluate vendor security controls early, signaling a commitment to security. By taking these steps, a balance is ensured between security, an optimal user experience and high performance. – Matthew Polega, Mark43
5. Adopt A Risk-Based Assessment Strategy
Companies must implement a risk-based assessment strategy. Evaluating a user’s threat level enables a tiered security approach, reducing friction for trusted users and adding verification steps for suspicious or unknown users. Accurate device identification is key to executing this strategy because it allows organizations to spot sophisticated spoofing attempts and reduce false positives. – Dan Pinto, Fingerprint
6. Conduct A Threat Model For All Users
Conduct a threat model for all the various users of the technology platform. This ensures you at least understand what the top threats are, can mitigate (not eliminate) them with compensating controls, and can respond quicker to a potential attack or breach. Without a threat model, you are likely to spend time securing low-risk/low-impact areas, leaving high-risk areas exposed. – Ed Adams, Security Innovation
7. Avoid Giving Generative AI Direct Access To Sensitive Data
Whether you outsource or build in-house, ensure generative AI (such as OpenAI) sits on top of your AI engine, without direct access to sensitive data. The generative AI should deliver responses in an easy-to-read format to enhance the user experience, while advanced algorithms process data behind the scenes. This approach safeguards your data and provides a seamless and secure user experience. – Shahar Chen, Aquant
8. Gather Stakeholder Feedback Each Quarter
Hold quarterly all-hands meetings with key platform users and security teams to gather feedback. Use these sessions to explain the rationale behind security protocols and demonstrate how user input shapes strategy. Engaging users in this way will foster acceptance and turn them into advocates for security measures. – James Beecham, ALTR
9. Determine User Permissions Automatically
Automatically determining user permissions based on data already present in your systems of record can eliminate manual processes in granting access. These processes can cause enormous delays and, at the same time, cause security gaps when manually granted permissions are not removed. Leveraging modern privileged identity management can automate these processes and provide greater access security. – Atul Tulshibagwale, SGNL.ai
10. Demonstrate Compliance With Robust Regulations
Ultimately, security comes above all else. Trust is slowly built and quickly lost and remains the key to long-term business growth. Demonstrating compliance with the most stringent global security compliance regulations reaffirms to customers that your organization prioritizes security. Optimal user experiences can only be achieved once a foundation of strong security is established. – Martin Taylor, Content Guru
11. Offer Biometric Authentication Methods
Security is a risk-management function that sometimes requires a trade-off between risk reduction and user experience and productivity. However, I believe you can have it both ways. A good example is using passwordless authentication methods—for example, allowing users to use biometrics to authenticate without having to remember a password. – Mike Britton, Abnormal Security
12. Treat UX Like A Product
Technology buyers commonly demand a strong user experience as a key buying criterion, with requirements ranging from accessibility to user interface responsiveness to API effectiveness. Organizations can deliver innovation, security and a positive UX by treating UX like a product and developing a dedicated roadmap that has design, architecture and engineering resources allocated to it. – Carlos Morales, Vercara
13. Make The Security Process Engaging
Make the whole security setup more informative and engaging. When prompting users for additional verification, offer a brief explanation of why it’s necessary. Add gamification elements—for example, award badges for setting up strong passwords. For lengthy security setups, such as multifactor authentication enrollment, implement progress bars to show users how close they are to completion. – Konstantin Klyagin, Redwerk
14. Optimize Loading Times
It’s very important to optimize loading times for users when they log into your app. There’s a lot of security processes going on during what seems like a simple process, but the end user wants a seamless experience that gets them up and running without too much fuss. – Syed Ahmed, Act-On Software
15. Be Mindful Of The Type Of Data You Store
It sounds simple, but be mindful about what features you actually need. For example, if you’re storing users’ biometric data, your duty to safeguard it is at its highest, so robust security features are warranted. But if all you’re storing is, for example, anonymized geographic data, then that can have fewer—though still strong—protections. Some security issues are less “pass/fail” and more of a spectrum. – Jordan Yallen, MetaTope
16. Assemble A Team With Diverse Specialties; Focus On Empathy
Start by assembling a diverse team that includes UX specialists alongside security architects and R&D engineers. Integrate empathy into your development life cycle through user research, usability tests and continuous feedback loops. Regularly review and apply these findings to inform technology decisions, balancing security with a seamless user experience. – Ilia Sotnikov, Netwrix
17. Leverage A CDN For Your Website
A content delivery network can significantly improve a website’s security, user experience and performance by storing frequently accessed content and reducing the load on origin servers. CDNs can block harmful traffic, provide security features and offer monitoring and analytics. Selecting a reliable provider, establishing a strategic caching setup and monitoring performance can ensure the best results. – Brian Sathianathan, Iterate.ai
18. Have Candid Discussions About Workflows And Security
Balancing robust security and an optimal user experience starts with conversation. Too often, people make assumptions about what’s driving the other side. Talk about it. I’ve found that if people pursue “shadow IT,” it’s because they’re lacking something they need to help them do their jobs, not because they disregard security. Talk openly about the need for security and the actual workflows of the people doing the work. – Ann Westerheim, Ekaru
19. Implement Invisible Security Measures
Implement invisible security measures such as device fingerprinting and behavioral biometrics. These frictionless checks analyze user patterns and device characteristics in the background, enhancing security without impacting the user experience. This approach allows for robust protection against fraud while maintaining seamless performance, striking an optimal balance between security and minimizing user friction. – Victor Rijo, Phrasly AI
20. Use AI For Real-Time Risk Analysis
Employ user-centric security design, leveraging AI for real-time risk analysis. This method uses machine learning algorithms to dynamically evaluate the risk associated with a user’s actions and adjust security protocols accordingly. By tailoring security measures to real-time risk levels, platforms can maintain robust security without disrupting the user experience or performance. – Sriram Panyam, DagKnows
