Meet Our Class of 2024 Interns: Making a Mark in Public Safety

This summer, Mark43 hosted an exceptional group of 11 interns, offering meaningful projects, mentorship, and valuable insights into the critical field of public safety. Over the past three months, our interns have been fully integrated into various departments across the company, from Software Engineering and Marketing to IT—gaining firsthand experience in what makes our work impactful and fulfilling.

This year, our interns have truly embodied our mission and thrived in our dynamic environment. As we say goodbye to the Class of 2024, we’re proud to highlight their impactful contributions.

Real and Lasting Impact Through Project Ownership

At Mark43, interns are integral to mission-critical projects from day one. They don’t just shadow; they actively contribute to our product development and partner with subject-matter experts on critical initiatives. Oscar Yu (Software Engineering Intern) shared, “Being involved in designing the project itself from the ground up was a first for me. From developing the initial tech doc to writing both frontend and backend code, it was an amazing learning experience.”

Interns were encouraged to think outside the box, making meaningful contributions to our product roadmap and company-wide initiatives, including our OnScene mobile app, Marketing campaigns, IT Jira process, CAD2CAD integration, and Analytics. As Ryan Cho (Product Owner Intern) puts it: “All the interns at Mark43 have been very fortunate in that all our projects are touching core pieces of our roadmap and current product.” Ishaan Poojari (Cloud Engineering Intern) adds: “It’s great to see my work having a tangible impact…every engineering decision had a real consequence in improving a certain aspect of an officer’s job.” Daniel Eze (Software Engineering Intern) also believes, “The opportunity to be part of such impactful work was both motivating and enlightening, reinforcing my commitment to developing technology that serves the greater good”.

Some interns even had the chance to see their work come to life in the field. Danielle Wong (Product Design Intern) recounted, “The company emphasizes the importance of understanding the impact of our products, which is why I had the opportunity to travel to Fresno for an on-site visit in the third week of my internship! There, I spoke with officers, learned about their processes and pain points, and accompanied them on a ride-along to understand their day-to-day duties.” John Rafael De Los Reyes (IT Support Intern) valued tasks that impacted productivity and built transferable IT skills, stating, “I had tasks that actually impacted the company’s productivity and built useful skills that can be transferred to any IT job.”

The supportive and collaborative environment at Mark43 left a mark on our interns, allowing them to see how different teams fit together. For example, Christina Luu (Product Design Intern) worked closely with product owners, designers, and engineers, which provided a comprehensive view of “how all the different roles come together to make a product.” Akanksha Nehete (Software Engineering Intern) added, I regularly collaborated with product and design, witnessing firsthand the dedication and creativity that drive our projects forward”.

Contributing to Something Bigger

Working in the public safety sector was a unique and memorable experience. They embraced the fast-paced tech startup environment while contributing to our mission of empowering communities and their governments with new technologies that enhance safety and quality. James Spokes (Product Owner Intern) highlighted, “There is a level of trust, mutual respect, and gratitude that exists in doing product work in the public safety sector that makes it so enjoyable.”

Direct interaction with our customers left a strong impression on our interns. Ryan Cho (Product Owner Intern) said, “Working with people who are putting their lives at risk daily, working day in and day out to protect their communities, made conversations so much more intimate and focused on creating meaningful work.” Halit Dincer (Software Engineering Intern) appreciated the direct communication with officers, noting, “It was incredibly insightful to communicate directly with police officers in the field and hear firsthand about their experiences with our software.” Danielle Wong (Product Design Intern) echoed this sentiment: “The emphasis on understanding the impact of our products meant that I was constantly engaging with real-world applications and user feedback.”

For engineering interns, developing technology with a greater purpose was particularly rewarding. Akanksha Nehete (Software Engineering Intern) observed, “It’s inspiring to see how technology can be hardened to address complex challenges in public safety, and writing code for Mark43 CAD added an extra layer of purpose to my work.” Daniel Eze and Oscar Yu (Software Engineering Interns) found fulfillment in creating solutions that improved operational efficiency and community safety: “It was inspiring to see how technology can support and improve the efficiency of essential services, ultimately contributing to the safety and well-being of communities,” Oscar added, “From faster response times and situational awareness to more effective crime reporting and analytics, every step we take is one towards a safer space for everyone.”

The intern projects had a notable impact on career confidence. Christina Luu (Product Design Intern) reflected, “Knowing that my designs improve our design system and customers’ user experience was my favorite part of this project.” John Rafael De Los Reyes (IT Support Intern) added, “It makes me feel good about myself that my work helps support first responders all over the world. I can say that I am proud to be a part of Mark43!”

“The Secret to Mark43’s Success Is Its People”

What sets Mark43 apart is our people—our greatest asset. We foster a culture of humility, inclusivity, excellence, and diligence. Our US-based interns come to our New York City headquarters to fully immerse themselves in our unique culture and collaborative spirit. Ishaan Poojari (Cloud Engineering Intern) reflected, “The best part of my experience at Mark43 was undeniably the people. Everyone across the organization is always open to collaborating and sharing information, which was especially helpful as an intern new to the company.”

Mentorship was a cornerstone of the intern experience. James Spokes (Product Owner Intern) said, “Having my mentor in the office enhanced my summer experience tenfold,” while Halit Dincer (Software Engineering Intern) and Margaret Webb (Demand Generation Marketing Intern) appreciated the collaborative cross-company feedback sessions, stating, “My curiosity and proactive engagement were always welcomed, regardless of department,” and “During project review sessions, numerous developers from different teams came together to provide feedback and support—this collaborative spirit made my internship not just educational but also highly engaging.”

Interns also enjoyed various social events, from Yankees games and bowling on National Intern Day to visiting the Edge at Hudson Yards. Margaret Webb (Demand Generation Marketing Intern) noted, “The Mark43 team ensured our internship experience was enjoyable both in and out of the office.” Toronto-based interns also participated in social events like trivia nights with their Canadian colleagues.

If you had to describe your Mark43 internship in one word, what would it be?
