Improving Public Safety in Florida: Top Three Insights from Florida Residents

Florida, known for its sunny beaches and vibrant communities, is no stranger to the challenges posed by natural disasters. The resilience of its residents is commendable, but recent statistics shed light on a growing concern: public safety during natural events. According to a recent survey commissioned by Mark43, 77% of Florida residents are worried about natural disasters and the ability of their local law enforcement to handle these events. This anxiety underscores a crucial need: enhancing trust in local public safety agencies through modern, reliable technology.

Through this survey of 1,026 Florida residents, we have identified three main insights into what residents are looking for in their public safety agencies.

Insight #1: Residents of Florida Demand Modern Police Technology Amidst Natural Disasters

81% of Florida residents reported not receiving immediate help during extreme weather events, highlighting the urgency to address staffing shortages and outdated technology issues. This widespread concern drives a significant demand for improved public safety measures. Floridians are calling for increased trust in their local public safety agencies, achievable through the adoption of modern, reliable technology.

In a state where hurricanes can disrupt entire communities, seamless communication between residents and public safety officials is crucial in building trust. Former Miami Beach Police Chief Donald De Lucca emphasized this necessity, stating, “You can’t afford for your residents, citizens, and visitors not to be able to get a hold of you or to talk to your officers on the street who are responding to those calls. That could be the cause of life or death. You’ve got to have the right CAD and RMS.”

Mark43’s cloud-native Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) and Records Management System (RMS) are designed to meet these critical needs by enabling real-time communication and efficient data management regardless of power outages, flooding or other natural disasters. Mark43 ensures that public safety agencies are equipped to handle emergencies effectively, thereby fostering trust within the community.

Insight #2: Florida Residents Call for Increased Funding

A significant 79% of survey respondents support the allocation of more state or federal funding to upgrade the technology used by local public safety agencies. This overwhelming majority reflects a clear understanding among Floridians that modern challenges require modern solutions; outdated systems can lead to delays and inefficiencies, potentially endangering lives.

The push for increased funding aligns with the broader trend of prioritizing technology in public safety. Residents recognize that investing in advanced tools and systems is not just about keeping up with the times; it’s about saving lives and protecting communities. With more robust funding, agencies can adopt technologies like Mark43’s Public Safety Platform, which integrate seamlessly with existing infrastructure and provides scalable, future-proof solutions.

Insight #3: Residents Want Agencies to Prioritize Emergency Preparedness Tools

While it’s clear that Floridians are calling for increased funding to upgrade technology, there’s an even more pressing aspect within this demand: the need for specialized emergency preparedness tools. A staggering 85% of residents believe their local law enforcement agencies should prioritize investment specifically in these tools. This statistic reveals an acute awareness among the public of the critical role that preparedness plays in effective emergency response.

Chief Joe DeGiulio of Boynton Beach Police Department underscores this need, stating, “If your emergency communications are interrupted, it impacts the public’s confidence in your agency. If a jurisdiction gets hit by a catastrophic storm, having a police department and fire rescue that is able to continue to do the primary functions and provide a level of normalcy for the community is a way to reassure your community that we will all get through this together.”

Emergency preparedness goes beyond general technological upgrades; it encompasses the strategic deployment of resources, real-time data analytics, and coordinated response mechanisms. These tools are essential for managing the unique challenges posed by natural disasters. When a hurricane strikes or a flood threatens, the ability to quickly assess the situation, mobilize resources, and communicate effectively can significantly reduce the impact on communities.

Mark43’s suite of public safety solutions includes advanced analytics, mobile capabilities, and user-friendly interfaces that empower law enforcement agencies to act swiftly and decisively. By prioritizing these investments, Florida’s public safety agencies can ensure they are always ready to respond to any crisis.
